  • Bafana Bafana Lose Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas to Injury Ahead of Egypt Clash

Bafana Bafana will be without midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas for Sunday’s clash against Egypt after both players were ruled out through injury, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed.

The absence of the two midfielders leaves South Africa facing a significant selection challenge in the centre of the pitch ahead of the match.

SAFA confirmed that neither Mokoena nor Aubaas will take part in Sunday’s encounter.

“The midfield will be the biggest challenge, as Bathusi Aubaas and Teboho Mokoena are out injured and will play no part on Sunday.”

    Two midfield options unavailable

Mokoena and Aubaas are both unavailable because of injuries, reducing the midfield options available to the Bafana Bafana coaching staff.

Their absence means South Africa will have to adjust its midfield combination for the Egypt match.

The two players’ roles in the squad make their unavailability an important development as the team prepares for the encounter.

    South Africa preparing for Egypt

The match against Egypt will require Bafana Bafana to make adjustments following the latest injury news.

With both midfielders ruled out, the coaching staff will have to determine which available players will start in the centre of the pitch and how the team will balance its defensive and attacking responsibilities.

The final midfield selection will be closely watched when the teams meet on Sunday.

    SAFA confirms injuries

SAFA’s confirmation provides clarity on the availability of the two players ahead of the match.

For now, the key information is that Mokoena and Aubaas will play no part in Sunday’s game.

Further team-selection details will depend on the players available to the coaching staff and the tactical approach chosen for the Egypt clash.

  • Orlando Pirates Says Court Action Is a Precautionary Step to Protect Club Funds

Orlando Pirates has confirmed that it has approached the High Court over financial transactions involving the football club, saying the court application is intended to preserve funds while the transactions are investigated.

In a statement published on 4 October 2026, the club said the legal action should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing and stressed that the individual concerned is cooperating with the process. Orlando Pirates FC

The statement comes after media reports about the court proceedings involving the club and financial transactions.

Pirates says it wants funds preserved during the investigation

According to the club, the High Court application seeks to preserve funds connected to certain financial transactions while the matter is investigated.

Pirates described the action as a precautionary measure designed to protect the club’s funds during the process.

The club has not presented the court application as proof that the individual involved has committed wrongdoing.

That distinction is important because a court application to preserve assets does not, by itself, establish liability or criminal wrongdoing.

Club stresses that the matter is still being dealt with

Orlando Pirates said the individual concerned is cooperating with the process and that the club remains committed to ensuring that the matter is handled fairly.

The club’s statement did not provide further details about the transactions or identify the individual involved.

Because the matter is before the court, Pirates said it would not comment further at this stage.

The club said it would provide additional information when it is able to do so.

    Pirates says normal operations continue

The football club also sought to reassure supporters, commercial partners and sponsors that the legal proceedings have not disrupted its normal operations.

Pirates said its day-to-day operations and commitments continue as normal.

The club added that its focus remains on the team and the season ahead.

This comes as Pirates continue their 2026/27 campaign. The club’s official website currently lists upcoming Betway Premiership fixtures, while Pirates are also preparing for the MTN8 final. Orlando Pirates FC

What the court application means at this stage

The club’s statement provides limited information about the underlying financial transactions, and further details will depend on the court process and any subsequent disclosures.

For now, the key points confirmed by Orlando Pirates are:

    • The club has brought a High Court application.
    • The application concerns funds linked to certain financial transactions.
    • Pirates wants the funds preserved while the transactions are investigated.
    • The club says this is a precautionary measure.
    • The individual concerned is cooperating.
    • The application is not a finding of wrongdoing.
    • Pirates says its normal operations and commitments continue.
    • The club will not comment further while the matter is before the court.

Media reports have provided additional allegations and details concerning the court papers, but those allegations remain matters to be determined through the appropriate legal process. TimesLIVE

Pirates asks supporters to allow the process to continue

The club’s response appears intended to distinguish the existence of court proceedings from any conclusion about wrongdoing.

Until the relevant legal and investigative processes are completed, claims about responsibility should therefore be treated as allegations rather than established facts.

For supporters, Pirates’ immediate message is that the club’s football operations continue and that the matter will be addressed through the legal process.

The hosts’ 3-1 victory over Algeria was rounded off with a stunning finish from Nhlanhla Gasa during the second period.

However, Raymond Mdaka’s men showed a different side to their game after the restart, scoring three unanswered goals during the second period.

Plaatjies put South Africa back on terms before Gasa netted a second goal to put the hosts ahead at the break.

Abrahams struck late on to complete a wonderful turnaround as South Africa moved from a goal behind to a two-goal winning margin.

  • Bafana Bafana Lose Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba for Eritrea AFCON Qualifier

Bafana Bafana Lose Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba for Eritrea AFCON Qualifier

Bafana Bafana will be without Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba when South Africa face Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Cairo on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

Head coach Pitso Mosimane confirmed that the two Mamelodi Sundowns players are unavailable after injuries kept them from training with the squad since its arrival in Egypt. Medical scans subsequently confirmed that both players were injured.

The news comes only days after both players featured in South Africa’s 2-1 victory over Guinea in Johannesburg.

    Modiba and Mokoena ruled out

Modiba was forced off during the second half of the Guinea match after suffering an injury. Mokoena, meanwhile, experienced discomfort late in the game but remained on the field as Bafana saw out the victory.

Mosimane confirmed ahead of the Eritrea fixture that neither player had been able to train with the team since arriving in Cairo.

The coach said the medical assessments confirmed the injuries and ruled the pair out of Wednesday’s match.

Both players remain with the squad while receiving treatment. Mosimane did not provide a definite return date and said their availability for the following international fixture against Egypt was also uncertain.

    Who could replace Modiba?

Modiba’s absence leaves Mosimane with several options at left-back.

Samukele Kabini is one of the players who could come into the starting XI. The Molde defender replaced Modiba against Guinea and subsequently scored the winning goal in South Africa’s 2-1 victory.

Mosimane has also identified other defensive options within his squad, including Fawaaz Basadien.

The coach previously explained that having a large squad during the international window was partly intended to provide cover when injuries affected the team.

    Mokoena’s absence affects the midfield

Mokoena started the Guinea match alongside Sphephelo Sithole in the central midfield.

His absence gives Mosimane another selection decision ahead of the Eritrea fixture.

Bathusi Aubaas is among the midfielders available to the coach, while the squad also includes Sithole and Brooklyn Poggenpoel.

The final team selection will determine how Mosimane reshapes the midfield without one of the players who started the opening qualifier.

South Africa head into the match after a winning start

Bafana began their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Guinea at the Orlando Amstel Arena on 26 September.

Samukele Kabini scored the decisive goal after Guinea had equalised, giving Mosimane a winning start in his return as South Africa’s head coach.

The Eritrea match is the second qualifier of the international window.

Eritrea’s home fixture is being played in Cairo, Egypt, rather than in Eritrea. The match is scheduled for Al-Salam Stadium, with kick-off at 6pm South African time.

Why the injuries matter for Bafana

Mokoena and Modiba were both included in Mosimane’s 30-man squad for the opening 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The coach had retained a strong core of experienced players while also bringing several new faces into the national team.

Their absence means Mosimane must make changes to a team that has just started a new qualifying campaign.

The situation also highlights why the coach selected a larger squad for this international window, with Bafana scheduled to play three matches: qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea followed by a friendly against Egypt.

For now, the confirmed position is straightforward: Mokoena and Modiba will not feature against Eritrea, while their availability for the Egypt friendly remains uncertain.

    Match information

    Match: Eritrea vs South Africa
Competition: 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

  • Raymond Mdaka Moves From Amajita Glory to South Africa’s U23 Olympic Mission

Raymond Mdaka’s work with South Africa’s junior national teams has entered a new phase. After guiding Amajita to the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations title, helping the team reach the FIFA U20 World Cup, and leading South Africa to a third consecutive COSAFA U20 crown in September 2026, Mdaka is also overseeing the country’s U23 side as it begins its campaign towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The latest COSAFA success came on 27 September 2026, when South Africa defeated hosts Mozambique 2-1 in Maputo. The victory not only retained the regional title but also secured Amajita’s place at the 2027 U20 AFCON in Ghana, where South Africa will arrive as defending champions.

Mdaka’s responsibilities now extend beyond the U20 age group. South Africa’s U23 team is already preparing for the qualification route to the 2028 Olympics, with Mdaka having been appointed to lead the side and having already conducted selection and preparation camps.

    Amajita’s rise under Mdaka

The foundations of Mdaka’s current reputation were built through a series of significant results with Amajita.

In 2024, South Africa won the COSAFA U20 Championship by beating Zambia 2-0 in the final. It was the country’s ninth title in the competition at the time.

The following year brought a much bigger breakthrough.

South Africa won its first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations title in May 2025, defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final in Cairo. Gomolemo Kekana scored the decisive goal in the second half.

The continental triumph also earned South Africa a place at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile. FIFA confirmed that South Africa qualified for the global tournament alongside Morocco, Egypt and Nigeria as Africa’s four representatives.

That sequence gave Amajita experience at regional, continental and global level.

    Another COSAFA title in 2026

South Africa’s latest regional success came in September 2026.

Amajita entered the COSAFA U20 tournament as defending champions and completed the competition with five wins from five matches. In the final, played in Maputo on 27 September, South Africa beat Mozambique 2-1. Oarabile Booysen and Steven Mendes scored for South Africa.

The victory represented another important step in the development programme because the regional tournament also served as a route into the following year’s continental championship.

By reaching the final, South Africa secured qualification for the 2027 U20 AFCON in Ghana before going on to win the regional trophy.

For Mdaka, the immediate U20 challenge is therefore not finished. Amajita will now prepare to defend the continental title they won in Egypt in 2025.

The U23 assignment is already under way

While Mdaka continues his involvement with Amajita, he has also taken charge of the South African U23 national team.

The U23 programme is centred on the qualification route to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. In July, Mdaka explained that the team had begun preparations for the Olympic qualifying campaign and assembled a 33-player selection group.

The U23 programme is therefore not simply a future possibility. It is already an active national-team responsibility.

In September, Mdaka named a U23 squad for two international friendlies against Algeria, scheduled for 30 September and 3 October in Durban.

The squad includes several players familiar from the U20 setup, reflecting the connection between the two development levels.

    Why the U20-to-U23 pathway matters

One of the most important features of Mdaka’s current assignment is the opportunity to continue working with players as they progress through the national-team system.

The U23 squad has been built partly around players who were involved with the U20 side that won the continental title and competed at the FIFA U20 World Cup. Mdaka said earlier in 2026 that the U23 group was being formed around those players while also looking at footballers who had not previously been part of the national-team setup.

That creates continuity between the age groups.

Players who have already experienced international football at U20 level can potentially carry that experience into the U23 environment, while the coaching staff can assess a wider pool of players competing in South Africa’s professional leagues.

    The Olympic qualification challenge

The U23 programme has a specific long-term objective: reaching the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The qualification route runs through the African U23 competition structure. Current reporting on the qualification process indicates that the African qualifiers lead towards the U23 AFCON, with the tournament providing the route to the Olympics.

That gives Mdaka a different type of challenge from the U20 competitions.

At U20 level, his immediate priorities have included developing young players and competing in COSAFA and CAF competitions. With the U23 team, the programme is tied directly to Olympic qualification and requires building a squad capable of progressing through a longer qualification process.

From regional success to a broader development pathway

Mdaka’s recent record has placed significant attention on South Africa’s junior national teams.

The 2025 U20 AFCON victory was historic because it gave Amajita their first continental title.

The 2026 COSAFA triumph then extended South Africa’s regional dominance, with the team retaining the championship for a third consecutive year.

The next stage is more complicated.

The U20 team must prepare for the 2027 AFCON in Ghana, while the U23 side is working towards Olympic qualification. Both programmes require player development, squad selection and sufficient preparation time.

Mdaka himself has stressed the importance of preparation ahead of the next U20 AFCON, saying the team needs more time to prepare for the continental tournament.

    What comes next for Mdaka?

The immediate calendar illustrates the scale of the assignment.

Amajita have just returned from Mozambique after winning the COSAFA title and securing qualification for the 2027 U20 AFCON. The U23 side, meanwhile, is preparing for its two matches against Algeria at the end of September and beginning of October.

The U20 team will subsequently turn its attention towards Ghana and the defence of its continental crown.

For the U23 side, the focus is the Olympic qualification pathway and the development of a squad capable of competing for a place at Los Angeles 2028.

The two responsibilities give Mdaka an unusually broad role within South Africa’s youth national-team structure.

A development story beyond the trophies

The most significant part of Mdaka’s recent work is not simply the number of trophies attached to his name.

His teams have provided a pathway through which young South African players have gained experience at COSAFA, AFCON and FIFA World Cup level. Several of those players are now appearing in the U23 setup, giving the national development system an opportunity to build continuity between age groups.

That pathway will now be tested at a higher level.

Amajita have a continental title to defend in Ghana, while the U23 side has an Olympic qualification campaign ahead.

For Mdaka, the next chapter is therefore less about looking back at the trophies already won and more about managing two development programmes with different competitions, age groups and objectives.
